Project Nightlight

Earlier in 2019, three women lost their lives in the hands of strangers. So during the annual Open Innovation Competition held by the City of Melbourne, they wanted to tackle the year’s biggest issue: safety on the streets. Shortlisted teams and start-ups from different disciplines came together to pitch their solutions to a panel of judges. We won second place, but the City of Melbourne decided to turn our humble idea into reality by sponsoring the idea with a small loan of 9 million dollars.

As seen on: The Age, Concrete Playground, Broadsheet, Pedestrian, TimeOut, and Dan Andrews’ Facebook post.

The most dangerous parts of Melbourne all have two main issues: lack of light and lack of people. We needed a way to protect the people of Melbourne, without losing the city’s vibrancy.

Introducing Project Nightlight: creating safety and comfort in the darkest
of places.

We’ll transform forty laneways across the CBD, Carlton and North Melbourne into a stunning feast of light — inviting crowds to places they usually avoid, thus increasing natural surveillance to help prevent crime.

Every element of a Nightlight was considered to deter crime. One example is that Baker Miller Pink has been proven to reduce aggression. We integrated that colour into most of the installations - a through line through out the designs.
